College Tips for Freshman Year

I graduated from a small predominately white high school in 2009 and graduated from a historically black college, Fort Valley State University, in 2013. These two totally different school experiences have shaped who I am as a person and I wouldn’t be who I am without them. As a former college student leader I wanted to share some tips for new students; especially first generation college students to give them some guidance.

Here’s a picture of some of my classmates and I at graduation in 2013. I am standing up on the far right/end.

ADVICE FOR FRESHMAN YEAR:
1. Establish rules and communicate early on with your roommate(s). Y’all don’t have to be best friends, but you live together now so respect people’s things and have boundaries.
2. Please be yourself and talk to people you don’t already know.
3. If you’re feeling down and need someone to talk to go seek out your university’s infirmary and seek free counseling if available.
4. I know it’s a new environment, but try not to go home every weekend and try not to stay in your dorm all day.
5. If you have a car make sure to get a parking decal asap!
6. If you have a car make sure you’re not being used by others who won’t even give you gas money or say thank you for giving them a ride.
7. There’s pros and cons to everything. In my opinion if you’re not a morning person don’t take an 8 A.M. class or maybe you are a morning person, so take the class and get it over with and have the rest of the day to yourself.
8. Check out websites like Chegg and Google other book rental sites before going to the bookstore.
9. When dealing with advisors, professors, financial aid, etc. make a copy of everything they give you. Keep your receipts and emails!
10. Figure out what campus activities or clubs fit your personality.
11. If you are interested in a historically black fraternity or sorority do not tell everybody. Focus on your grades and community service.
12. Be careful about what you post on social media. There is life after college and future employers look at that.
13. If you have an online class or have to upload an assignment online upload it early because sometimes depending on where you are or what time of day it is the WiFi won’t be as strong.
14. If you don’t understand something or need extra help seek out a tutor and go to your professor during their office hours to ask questions or get clarity on something you didn’t understand during the lecture.
15. Try to call or text your parent(s) at least once every few weeks and not only when you need or want something.
16. Focus on your required classes before permanently choosing a major. So if you choose to change majors you won’t lose so many credits.
17. Talk to your academic advisor. This person is vital in helping you know what classes you need to take in order to graduate on time.
18. Go to class and try your best to sit up front and take notes.
19. Get a part time job. It’s nice to have money in your pockets and good to have work experience.
20. Take advantage of free things your campus may offer.
21. Invest in a good umbrella and get some rain boots because when it rains on campus at FVSU it poured down!
22. I know the cafeteria has various food options, but try to eat healthy when you can. Don’t forget to try to get at least 6 to 8 hours of sleep a night.
23. Get involved in the community and city your college is in.
24. Go to the library and study there.

25. Study Hard, but Play Hard. Enjoy your college years and cherish the moments!

“Just Mercy” Movie Review

The powerful, emotional, and almost two and half hour film Just Mercy is based on true events that occurred in Monroeville, Alabama in 1987. The film chronicles the harsh reality of racial inequality and a corrupt American criminal justice system. I think that actors Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan were phenomenal and were snubbed of a 2020 Oscar nomination. The film was also produced by Michael B. Jordan and released in select U.S. cities Christmas 2019 and released nationwide on January 10th, 2020. I don’t know if the release date made the film not be qualified to be nominated for the 2020 Academy Awards or if “the powers that be” who do the nominating didn’t want this kind of movie to get publicity, but in my opinion, the movie is a must-see and should be required viewing for everyone.

I watched a matinee showing of the film and felt a range of emotions and cried happy and sad tears while watching. The film tells of a young black Harvard educated lawyer named Bryan Stevenson, played by Michael B. Jordan, who heads down to a rural Alabama town to help wrongfully incarcerated people who lack the resources to get adequate legal representation. One case about a black death row inmate, Walter McMillian, played by Jamie Foxx, stands out and captures the attention of Bryan Stevenson.

Official “Just Mercy” Movie Trailer

***SPOILER ALERT***

PLEASE STOP READING IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE FILM and come back to read the rest after you have seen the film.

Despite the many obstacles and hurdles Bryan still had such a caring and determined spirit and wanted to help to free innocent people like Walter. Going out of his way to meet Walter’s family said a lot and meant a lot to Walter and his family. A standout, heartbreaking moment during the film that made me cry was when the older inmate who was suffering from PTSD from the war had to go to the electric chair and Walter was trying to comfort him by telling him to breathe and think of the trees and when it was time for Walter to die the other inmates started chanting and banging their cups up against the prison bars. The irony of the film is that it takes place in Monroeville, Alabama. Monroeville is famously known from author Harper Lee’s book “To Kill A Mockingbird”, which is about a white lawyer representing a wrongfully incarcerated black man who eventually gets freedom. The town and it’s white citizens prides itself on that history, yet ironically is repeating the history of imprisoning wrongly accused innocent people.

I think that something that stands out in this film is that all of this happened 33 years ago and when you think about it that is not that long ago. I think at times some people tend to picture or visualize racism of being something of the past in the 1950s when there were black and white movies and no computers, but these events occurred in the late 1980s and early 1990s, during a time when many millennials were babies or small children. I think it’s important to know the history of our country and people’s true-life stories so that society can learn to not repeat inequalities and to see how far we still have to go as a nation. I give this film 5 stars and I hope that it sparks beneficial conversations and changes in our American judicial system.

On The Run Tour Review – 2014

I went to the Beyoncé and Jay-Z concert all by myself and had an AMAZING time!

bj

Back in April 2014 I heard rumors that the power couple was going on a Bonnie and Clyde: “On The Run” themed tour across the country. As soon as I heard about the concert I thought about the following things:

  • Who enjoys The Carters as much as I do?
  • Who can afford to go?
  • Who will I go with?

When the answers to my questions were lacking I thought I won’t even go because I have no one to go with, but I thought again and something said: “GO and live life to the fullest and have no regrets!”

At my age I’m comfortable enough with myself to go to places alone sometimes because it’s less hassle and very interesting to people-watch. lol

So, being the young working woman I am I went ahead and purchased my floor seat.
On Tuesday, July 15th as soon as I got off of work and drove to Atlanta I got on the MARTA Train because it was going to be too much traffic during that time of day and construction going on in Downtown Atlanta.

stage (How close I was to the stage.)

I got into the Georgia Dome with no problems. Then I stood in line thirty minutes because I had to get a souvenir t-shirt! After I finally got my t-shirt and pink wristband for the floor level seats I people-watched! I saw Kandi Burruss and her husband Todd from Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta” and they are so short in person!  Television definitely makes people look larger. I didn’t see any other celebrities, but there were a lot of “wannabee” celebrities in the audience. I even saw an older woman who looked like someone’s great-grandma dressed in her Sunday Best for the concert. It was hilarious!

I was anxiously anticipating Jay and Bey to appear on stage! I’ve been a fan of Beyoncé since Destiny’s Child and have liked Jay-Z’s music since he sampled “Hard Knock Life” from the musical “Annie”.

The ticket stub said the show would start at 8PM, but by the time everyone got in the stadium it was about 8:45PM.  Then right at 8:55PM the lights went off and the screens showed the On The Run movie trailer and everyone in the audience stood up and went crazy. It was like magic when Beyoncé and Jay-Z appeared on stage and that’s when I literally screamed and almost cried.

otr

Y’all don’t understand the chills I had when I saw them on stage and on screen. The concert was THEE BEST EVER and worth every penny.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z most definitely put on a show so good that I want to go again! The audience stood up the whole two hours! I loved Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s chemistry. Despite the rumors about their marriage you could feel their energy radiating from the stage. They put on a good performance . Jay-Z and Beyoncé performed “03 Bonnie and Clyde” and transitioned into other songs.

However, my favorite part of the show was when Beyoncé sang a cover of Lauryn Hill’s “Ex-Factor” which was “flawless” and when Jay-Z performed “Public Service Announcement”. I don’t want to give everything away, but overall the show was amazing and will appear on HBO this Fall 2014.
